Miniaturization of Tantalum Capacitors
The case size of the Tantalum Capacitors has been reduced within the last 20 years to 25 % of the needed footprint space on the board.
A consequently optimization of the Tantalum raw material, a sophisticated component design and new manufacturing technologies have enabled the increase of the volumetric efficiency.
As a result to that, the capacity within the same component size increased – or a smaller case size with same capacity can be realized (Graph 3)
The graph 4 shows how the (capacitance) x (voltage) per gram (CV/g) has steadily improved over time.
CV/g defines the volumetric efficiency of the powder. A higher CV/g means a higher capacitance from the same volume.
