LoRa™
LoRa™ Technology is a proprietary wireless technology working in the Sub-GHz band. It utilizes a spread spectrum modulation to enable long range coverage,
low power consumption, high network capacity, robust communication and localization capability. LoRa Technology is capable of demodulating 20dB below noise level, significantly improving immunity to the inference when combined with integrated forward error correction. With its high sensitivity, down to -148dBm, extremely long range connectivity can achieved.
Main characteristics of LoRa™:
- Long range – greater than 15 km
- High capacity of up to 1 million nodes
- Long battery life – over 10 years
- Reduced synchronization overhead and no hops in mesh network
- Secured and efficient network
- Interference immunity
Using LoRa™ in your Application
In order to set up a working LoRa™ application, the following 3 basic parts have to be installed:
- LoRa Technology Network Server
- LoRa Technology Gateway
- End-Device (with embedded LoRaWAN™ Protocol)
If you want to install a Private Network, you can use any LoRa Alliance certified gateway and network services, like the following:
- Gateway: Actility, Cisco, Kirlink, Multitech
- Network Server: Actility, IBM, Senet
If you want to use/set up a Puplic Network, the Service of a Public Network Operator (Telecom) is required. In return public Gateways can be used, which are integrated by Telecom companies on their towers. Following Service Providers offer LoRa Technology services:
- Europe: Bouygues, KPN, Vodafone, Swisscom
- Asia: SingTel
LoRa™ Topology
LoRa Technology Network’s architecture is a star topology. End devices transfer data to gateways which pass data to the network server. Gateways are connected to the network server via standard IP connections while end-devices use single-hop wireless communication to one or many gateways. All end-point communication is generally bi-directional, but also supports operation such as multicast enabling software upgrade over the air or other mass distribution messages to reduce the on air communication time.
LoRaWAN™ Protocol
The LoRaWAN™ Protocol is a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) specification intended for wireless battery operated devices in regional, national or global networks. LoRaWAN data rates range from 0.3 kbps to 50 kbps.
End devices with embedded LoRaWAN™ Protocol on-board easily connect to any LoRa Alliance certified gateway and network service.
The LoRaWAN™ protocol implements several layers of encryption to ensure the highest security for the whole infrastructure.
