Inductors and Timing Devices
The miniaturization of inductors is interesting for many applications. The basic parameters of high inductance at low DC resistance and small volume initially seems contradictory. However a lot happened here too, for example, by the improved multilayer and molded technology.
Currently a thinfilm high frequency inductor was released in unimaginable smallness of 0,25×0,125mm (008004) and with the same quality value Q as the design larger series 01005.
The crystals dimensions of 3,2×2,5mm are considered as standard and significantly smaller designs as 2,0×1,6mm are already find widespread use.
There are proposals of some suppliers to place 2016 sizes on 3225 pads. It isn`t always necessary to change the layout.
On crystal oscillators the MEMS technology and improved chip design has given the possibility to integrate quartz element and oscillation circuit in the smallest packages. The integration into a complete unit offers besides the saving of board space also a solution for accuracy and quality problems.
There are also more and more Real Time Clocks (RTC) with extremely low power consumption in the size of 3,2×2,5×1,0mm available, which can be used especially for mobile, battery-powered applications.
