STMicroelectronics – Dot-sized ESD-clamping diodes guards smart objects from failures
ST’s new 0.6 x 0.3-mm single-line ESD-protection diodes quickly clamp transients to a low voltage thanks to their snap-back technology with 5.8 V trigger voltage. With a respective capacitance of 7.5 pF and 6 pF, both the unidirectional ESDZL5-1F4 and the bidirectional ESDZV5-1BF4 ensure high-speed signal application compatibility for space-constrained smart objects.

Snapback effect
The 0201 Z-series behaves differently from standard ESD diodes, which start to clamp from the breakdown voltage VBR value (corresponding to the avalanche voltage of the diode) following a slope linked to the dynamic resistance RD of the diode. The clamping voltage is given by VCL = VBR + RD • IPP, where IPP is the peak pulse current. The 0201 Z-series ESD diodes offer a Snapback effect that will not turn on until reaching their trigger voltage (VTRIG). Once VTRIG reached, then the voltage will suddenly decrease down the holding voltage (VH). In this case, VCL= VH + RD • IPP. This new protection technology also offers lower dynamic resistance (RD) than standard ESD diodes. The Snapback effect combined with improved dynamic resistance leads to a drastic reduction of the clamping voltage.
