Intel 660p: The first consumer QLC based SSD
The Intel 660p is the company’s second PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive (SSD) that is fitted with the 64-Layer Quadruple-Level-Cell (QLC) 3D NAND Flash. Flash memory products equipped with QLC NAND are capable of saving four bits per cell; thus, being able to represent 16 voltage levels in a single flash memory cell.
The improved storage density associated with the new QLC NAND flash technology gives Intel the capability to produce Die’s with higher capacities – the result is a noticeable improvement in the cost per GB while delivering similar read and write performance to existing 3D TLC NAND based SSDs. Effectively, the Intel SSD 660p is an ideal entry-level M.2 consumer solution that provides better performance at a lower price point in comparison to existing SATA SSDs and legacy Hard Disk Drives (HDDs).
