3D Magnetic Sensor

Enhancing Applications With New

3D Magnetic Sensors

Used in a wide variety of applications – in automotive, industrial and consumer markets – magnetic sensors are used for speed, rotational speed and position measurement, as well as linear position and -angle. Now, with the introduction of a new 3D magnetic sensor from Infineon, you can take your designs to the next level.

Highly energy-efficient 3D magnetic sensing

Infineon’s 3D magnetic sensor TLV493D-A1B6 stands out for the little power it requires, especially in light of its capabilities. It comes in a tiny 6-pin package, and can directly measure x, y and z magnetic field components. Use it in related applications – such as e-meters, multi-function knobs, or joy sticks – to measure 3D movement, linear travel and 360° rotation.

The TLV493D-A1B6 3D magnetic sensor is also RoHs compliant and JESD47 qualified: it meets the highest quality standards and fulfills strict environmental regulations.

Ideal for compact e-meters with top efficiency ratings

Current attempts to tamper with e-meters using large magnets has required electric meter systems to be equipped with up to three magnetic sensors to capture all dimensions of the magnetic field. However, looking ahead into the future, 3D sensors such as TLV493D-A1B6 from Infineon will change the status quo: just one 3D sensor can replace the three magnetic sensors. The result is a smaller e-meter with greater energy efficiency and enhanced anti-tampering protection.

Main benefits

Integrating the 3D magnetic sensor TLV493D-A1B6 into relevant applications allows you to create designs that are smaller, more robust and more precise, primarily thanks to the product’s ability to sense without contact in addition to its high temperature stability.

Key features:

  • 3D magnetic sensing
  • Integrated temperature sensing
  • Low current consumption
  • 007 μA in power down mode
  • 10 μA in ultra low power mode
  • 7 to 3.5 V operating supply voltage
  • Digital output via 2-wire standard I2C interface
  • Bx, By and Bz linear field measurement up to ±150 mT
  • 12-bit data resolution for each measurement direction
  • Resolution 98 μT/LSB
  • Operating temperature range from -40 °C to 125 °C
  • TSOP6 package

Challenge:

Tampering with e-meters to steal electricity is on the rise in India and other parts of Asia. To curb this growing problem, some governments have issued standards for magnet immunity in energy meters. Generally, the magnetic stray field may influence an e-meter’s accuracy by a maximum of 2%.

Solution:

A 3D magnetic sensor like the TLV493D-A1B6 from Infineon helps prevent energy theft by measuring external stray fields in all directions.

Application 1: Multi-function knobs

Challenge:

To identify various knob movements, multi-function knobs have traditionally required numerous switches and rotary encoders, or photo sensors. This translates into needing multi-stacked PCBs for sensor assembly.

Solution:

Equipped with a 3D magnetic sensor, a multi-function knob is capable of performing knob rotation sensing; left, right, up, and down sensing; and knob push sensing. Moreover, the resulting sensing system is completely abrasion free.

Application 2: Joystick

Challenge:

As a control element, the joystick has experienced a revolution over the past two decades. Instead of moving a joystick to various positions to push switches, now two highly-accurate analog potentiometers with a complex mechanic sense all movement. However, the mechanic and potentiometer are highly susceptible to abrasion.

Solution:

3D sensing of joystick movement, as well as 2D sensing of the main stick movement, are made possible by the TLV493D-A1B6 3D magnetic sensor. This high-quality product from Infineon also facilities movements like stick torsion and stick push-down. By choosing TLV493D-A1B6, you can ensure your sensing system avoids any abrasion.
