STMicroelectronics: dSPIN L6472 Micro-stepping Motor Driver

The predictive current control algorithm and adaptive decay technique provide high accuracy and smoothness in respect to the traditional current control. Fully embedded non-dissipative current sensing allows to operate without any external shunt and minimizes overall power losses.L6472 is the newest member of the STMicroelectronics’ dSPIN fully integrated family of micro-stepping motor drivers. IC has en embedded MOSFET power stage with RDSON as low as 0.28Ω, which can drive up to 7A peak / 3A rms current.

Thanks to the integrated motion control engine it makes possible to control either a motor speed or to give a positioning commands. The driver then generates automatically a complete sequence steps with defined acceleration, maximum speed & deceleration in order to reach the requested position. Stepping resolution can be flexibly configured from full-step up to the 16 micro-steps. Patented method of adaptive current control selects the optimum current recirculation (slow / fast / mixed decay) at each commutation point and controls the duration. Innovative predictive current control achieves better “average" current regulation in comparison with the conventional peak current control. Thanks to these features the movement is more smooth & precise. Fully integrated current sensing reduces power dissipation as the application can operate without any shunt resistors.

In connection with the SPI interface it brings a great flexibility to change the requested current reference any time just by writing the appropriate register. Driver is available in two packages, HTSSOP28 and PowerSO36. Therefore optimum selection can be done depending on space requirements or thermal performance. ST is offering various evaluation boards, such as EVAL6472H (for HTSSOP option) & EVAL6472PD (for PowerSO option) which can be interfaced by STEVAL-PCC009V2. In addition a new cost-effective tool EVAL6472H-DISC where L6472H + STM32 microcontroller is assembled enables quick evaluation. Graphical user interface for PC makes the evaluation very easy and comfortable. Just few clicks and USB connection to be done and the motor starts turning!
