Rutronik introduces industrys first Nanopower Anisotropic Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs from Honeywell

Distributor Rutronik now offers industry’s first Nanopower Anisotropic Magnetoresistive Sensor Integrated Circuits from Honeywell. They provide the highest level of magnetic sensitivity, i.e. as low as 7 Gauss typical, while requiring nanopower of 360nA typical.

When compared to other magnetic technologies, Honeywell’s new sensor ICs offer design engineers a number of advantages. They are smaller as well as more durable and reliable than reed switches, at the same sensitivity and essentially the same cost. Therefore, they are ideal for battery powered applications where previously only reed switches could be used due to very low requirements and large air gap needs. The sensor ICs’ higher sensitivity allows the ability to sense air gaps twice the distance of Hall-effect sensors. It improves design flexibility and can offer significant application cost savings by utilizing smaller or lower strength magnets.

The Nanopower Series is available in two magnetic sensitivities:

• SM351LT for applications requiring ultra-high magnetic sensitivity with 7G typical and 11G max. operate and a very low current draw of 360nA typical

• SM353LT for applications requiring very high magnetic sensitivity with 14G typical and 20G max. operate and a very low current draw of 310nA typical.

They come in a subminiature SOT-23 surface mount package on tape and reel, allowing for use in automated pick-and-place component installation. Omnipolarity allows the sensor to be activated by either north or south pole, eliminating the need for the magnet polarity to be identified, simplifying installation and potentially reducing system cost. The push-pull (CMOS) output does not require external pull-up resistors, making it easier and more cost-effective to operate. The non-chopper stabilized design eliminates electrical noise generated by the sensor.

The Nanopower Series Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs with a temperature range of -40°C up to +85°C are designed for use in a wide range of battery-operated applications (e.g. water, gas and electricity meters, industrial smoke detectors and security systems), white goods (e.g. dishwasher and microwaves), medical equipment (e.g. hospital beds and medication dispensing cabinets) and consumer electronics such as notebook computers, tablets, and cordless speakers.
