Advantech – New R2.1 Type 6 COM Express Compact Module

Advantech presents the SOM-6894, a new COM Express 2.1 Compact Module in Type 6 pin-out module board. It is designed with the latest 4th generation Intel® Core™ i7-4650U vPro, i5-4300U vPro, i3-4010U processors, Intel® Celeron processor 2980U which integrates the CPU and PCH onto one single chip, resulting in lower power consumption but better CPU and GT3, GT2 and GT1 graphics performance.

The module is available at distributor Rutronik as of now. At embedded world (February 25-27), Rutronik presents in hall 1, booth 310 + 249 a complete portfolio for the Embedded Systems of the future.SOM-6894 features up to 16GB of DDR3L 1600MHz non-ECC unbuffered memory. It takes up around 24% less space and gives a 15% CPU performance increase.

The new module delivers similar performance but has a lower 15W Thermal Design Power (TDP) rating compared with the Intel® 3rd generation Core™ i7 COM Express Basic modules. Therefore, SOM-6894 provides more flexibility and options for customers to design their carrier boards. This module is ideal for applications with high graphic requirements and multiple display connectivity, e.g. medical, digital signage, automation and surveillance applications.

Thanks to the latest Intel® HD graphics with DX 11.1, OGL 3.2, OCL 1.2 support, SOM-6894 delivers an about 30% better graphics performance than previous versions. In addition, SOM-6894 supports dual and triple independent displays for even better media and display capabilities. It also supports 18- or 24-bit LVDS, HDMI/DVI/DisplayPort as well as four PCIe x1,four SATAII, two USB3.0, eight USB2.0, GbE, LPC, SMBus and I²C Bus.

Furthermore, SOM-6894 supports Advantech iManager 2.0 that provides a valuable suite of programmable APIs such as multi-level watchdog and hardware monitor. The iManager ensures that functions operate even if the operating system fails, helping enhance system stability and compatibility, and reducing effort on carrier board design and platform migration.
